What arthritis drugs are linked to bone decay?
Arthritis sufferers nervous about side effects
The FDA announced that some experimantal arthritis drugs are associated with bone decay, which is a serious blow for people who are already dealing with a painful joint problem that can manifest itself in several debilitating forms. Many people were looking for new arthritis treatments, and drugs such as fulranumab and tanezumab which block pain at the nerve level may also be creating bone decay in patients who are taking other pain medications. Unfortunately, this is quite common among people who may self-medicate with over the counter pills when they experience flareups.
Arthritis medications often work differently for different people, so many individuals may not get relief from traditional medications. Drug manufacturers argue that the bone decay side effect is rare and are hoping to get clearance to test many of these new medications, some of which are already approved for cancer pain.
Notes and Special Information
Special note: Bone loss from arthritis drugs may not affect you so always ask your doctor if your medications are on the list of drugs identified by the Food and Drug Administration as dangerous to bone density.
